Two of the most common features of today's typewriters were developed in the nineteenth century. ![]() Burt's machine subsequently, however, a copy of his device was built and exhibited at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. A patent office fire in 1836 destroyed the only model of Mr. Burt's "Typographer" looked very much like a butcher's block and, unfortunately, performed with about the same delicacy.
